Ho ho ho.. the day has arrived. 18 days after the contest was launched, there are 120 fans on SheepTech’s Facebook page, myself included.

To pick the winner, I have used Random.org’s list randomizer. The list of people who liked SheepTech’s Facebook page is copied to Random.org, in the same order as shown on Facebook.

Upon clicking the “Randomize” button, the list will be shuffled, and the person who came on top of the new list will be the winner. I have made a video showing the drawing process:

Many people are willing to spend their hard earned money on virtual items in games they are obsessed with, such as Farmville. What they are doing is essentially fattening the wallets of the game company investors, while receiving something that doesn’t exist, in a world that doesn’t exist. That is why they call it virtual world.

What about this: spend money on virtual items in a village building game, which correspond to a real village in Uganda. You buy a virtual blanket in the game, a villager in Uganda receives a real blanket.

New Era Charity makes it possible with its iPhone game, Raise the Village.

In this game, you becomes the chief of a village in Uganda, or so to speak, right from the comfort of your couch with your iPhone. You help improve your villager’s life, sending aids to them, building farms etc.

Your villagers will report to you when they have received your item, with a photo of them and your purchased item.

And when someone ask you what have you done to make the world a better place, just whip out your iPhone and show them your village.

I personally think it would be a good idea if it is possible to earn virtual in-game currency by viewing ads. This way, even the stingiest iPhone user can help improve the village.

For the time being, it seems that the app is only available in the U.S. App Store.

If you ended up reading this, chances are you are a geek who periodically need a dose of amusing science fiction and mind intriguing goodness. The following is a list of movies I have personally seen and thinks will satisfy your inner geek.

*No Star Wars, no Star Trek, no Matrix, no Terminator, no aliens, no zombies.

1. The Social Network (2010)

A story about how Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2003 and what happened along the way. Very inspiring for internet entrepreneur, but you might end up hating Mark for what he did to his partner.

2. Moon (2009)

A man doing a one-man-show job on the Moon, working with his friendly and caring robot, GERTY. You’ll be amazed as the story develops unpredictably. A must watch for sci-fi fans.

A true story about John Nash, a Nobel prize winner who suffers from schizophrenia. The outstanding mathematician had his life ruined when he’s told that some of his closest friends are nothing but imaginary friends.

While all your attempts to lucid dream fails miserably, Leonardo DiCaprio is able to lucid dream with a group of people, several levels deep (a dream in a dream in a dream etc.) in this movie. His lucid dream however is not as fun as it should be.

5. The Man from Earth (2007)

No action. No effects. No aliens. Nothing extraordinary. Just a room full of experts on various fields having a cleverly interesting conversation which later turns heated. For the entire 87 minutes, this sci-fi movie will set at the same scene, with its actors doing nothing but talk.

How can this be sci-fi? Well, the man above claims to be a man who has been living on earth for 14,000 years. The conversation is extremely engaging and brilliant.

6. The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)

This guy has the ability to time travel without a time machine, due to biological reason. The time travel happens randomly without warning, making him disappear from his wife a la “now you see, now you don’t“.

A geek can be sentimental too, and if you are one, this movie is for you. A movie even your non-geek partner will enjoy.

7. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

A baby born in a condition of an 80 years old man, and grow younger as time goes by. “Aging backwards” they call it.

Amazon is offering 3 (+1) full version games free for download, namely Build-a-lot, Jewel Quest 2, The Scruffs and Big Kahuna Reef. This offer this valid until February 10, 2009.

Though being free, Amazon still needs your credit card information before you can start the free downloads. You will also need to have Amazon Downloader installed on your computer in order to download those free games.

The offer seems to be only valid to those inside US. I tried faking a US address as my billing address, and Amazon let it go. However, when I place my order, it says:

We could not process your order because of geographical restrictions on the product which you were attempting to purchase. Please refer to the terms of use for this product to determine the geographical restrictions.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

I’m unsure why Amazon restrict the offer to only Americans. Let me know if you have luck downloading these free games outside the US.

SheepTech is 1 Year Old!

SheepTech is now one, after a year from January 12, 2008. The first year wasn’t good at all, with almost no updates for 8 months due to heavy school work, resulting in a very very slow growth.

I made a comeback in December 2008 though, and this stimulates growth again. Daily traffic is tripled while RSS subscribers went over 200.

The look and feel of the blog hasn’t change much, except for some tweaks here and there.

Google PageRank of the homepage remains 2, while several internal posts are having PR2 and PR1, with an exception—the Apple WordPress theme post with PR3, higher than the homepage.

Please do let me know if you have any suggestion or thoughts on SheepTech.

Dual-Core & Quad-Core Might Soon Be a Joke

Dual core and quad core processors might be a joke to our grandchildren in future, with Dell claiming that it would soon be mass producing supercomputers with 960 cores for the general consumer market. Just like how those brick-like big and heavy mobile phones looks more like a joke to today’s generation.

Eric Greffier, a Dell senior executive, said: “Before mobile phones were reserved for the few, now we can’t live without them. It will be the same with these supercomputers. They are the building block for the computing of the future.”

The Tesla supercomputer is 250 times faster than an average PC. Priced between £4,000 and £8,000, it looks pretty much the same as a CPU of an average PC. If the supercomputer is retailed with a zero missing in its price tag, everything would just be oh-so-perfect.
