Some of these file hosting sites is just a pain to use, with annoying ads and waiting time.

WeTransfer is a minimalistic file transfer service with no waiting time, and no annoying ads. It just difficult to judge the content of a file by its name and size, since they can be faked easily.

Enter Vertor, a young torrent search engine that promise to check for downloadability, viruses, DRM and passwords for every torrent file listed. Besides, Vertor will also provide screenshots for movies and previews for songs to ensure that you are downloading the right media file.

20 seconds sample for audio file:

Screenshots for video file:

Other basic information of the torrent file are listed as well, such as file name, category, number of seeders & leeches, file size, and the content of the torrent file.

Vertor might not have a beautiful design, but it definitely is one of the cleanest torrent search engine out there. There is no advertisements in any form (yet), as mentioned on their About us page.

The project is devoted to make bittorrent protocol even more popular, easy-to-use and reliable! We have other reputed on-line projects that make enough profit to invest a small part of it in this experiment. Our plan is to develop Vertor more and not to place any advertisement at least for the nearest one or two years. We want to make it as convenient for you as possible!

I really like the fact that I am able to have sneak peek at the torrent file before downloading, making sure I am downloading the correct file, not password and/or DRM protected. It happens to me quite often. If you notice, I usually include a thumbnail on each of SheepTech’s blog post.

For example, I’d usually go hunt for designer’s icon out there for Twitter posts. Most of these icons come in different sizes, colors and file formats, and will be compressed into a .zip or .rar file for downloading. But all I need is just one icon for my blog post, why on earth should I download all other unnecessary icons?

No need of that anymore with LoadScout, a handy freeware that will allow you to browse online archives, and then select the files in it that you want to download. Meaning you can choose the files you want to download in an archive without the need of downloading the entire archive beforehand.

Here’s how it works:

1. Copy and paste the URL (http or ftp) of the .zip or .rar file you want to browse, then click “OK”.

2. All the files in the .zip or .rar will now be listed and you can browse and look for the file you wanted to download.

3. Double-click on the particular file you wanted to download, then select the output path.

LoadScout could do more according to its website. It can show information of an .mp3 or .avi file without you downloading beforehand. You can also play part of a .mp3 or .avi file before downloading. This way you can identify the media file first before downloading, in case you’re downloading the wrong one. Too bad I am unsure how to get any of these features working.

[Download LoadScout] – Windows 95/98/Me or Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP (Vista).

(via MakeUseOf)

©2011 SheepTech

Download Specific Files from a Large Zip Archive

YouTube Provides Download Link, Somewhat

Tech News

download

video

YouTube

As reported at ars technica, YouTube seems to be providing a download link at the bottom left of all videos on the ChangeDotGov channel. It’s so old school and is no longer relevant these days. But yet, some webmasters or bloggers are still doing it, not realizing it will do more harm than good. If you are one of them, read this.

One of the most popular reason to disable right-click on a website is to prevent visitors from downloading or stealing their images. But it will no longer work as there are so many other ways to download an image from a website without using the right-click.

These are the 3 methods that would enable you to download any images from a right-click disabled website easily:

Drag & drop image to desktop or browser’s address bar

This is the easiest method of all. Just drag the image you wanted to download to your desktop (or just anywhere else in your local disk) and it will be downloaded automatically. This will work in both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Alternatively, you can drag the image to the Firefox’s address bar. Doing this will load the image in the browser and you are now free to right-click on the image and save it.

The drawback is it will not work on linked images and non-draggable images—a website background for example.

Open Page Info in Firefox, download from there

By any chance the drag method do not work, try this one.

In Firefox, go to
Tools
→
Page Info
.

Click on the
Media
tab.

Look for the image you wanted to download in the list.

Click the “Save As…” button.

This method eliminates the need of looking into the page’s source code manually, as all images on the webpage will be listed in the “Page Info”, making life easier.

Print screen, crop, save

This would be the last resort. It is not the best way, for you would need to crop the image after capturing the screenshot, and most probably the outcome wouldn’t be perfect. Why didn’t my download speed get anywhere near there?

Answer
Most ISPs quote download speed in kilobit(kb) or megabit(Mb). In contrast, download speed displayed in internet browsers or P2P programs are displayed in kilobyte(kB).

1 byte = 8 bits

Therefore, if you are subscribing to a 1Mbps (1000 Kbps) package from your local ISP, your download speed would be at 122.07 kB/s. If you’re unsure, you can use an online converter to determine your real download speed.

Now stop swearing or cursing your ISP whenever you see only 120kB/s download speed when you are subscribing to a 1Mbps package. You are indeed getting what you are subscribing for.

©2011 SheepTech

Why is my download speed way lower than what I’m subscribing?
